The Beethoven Gateway is a research database and portal to digital resources on the composer.

A joint project of the Ira F. Brilliant Center for Beethoven Studies and the American Beethoven Society, the Beethoven Gateway remains open at all times, free of charge to anyone with access to the internet. Initiated in 1993 (as the Beethoven Bibliography Database), the Beethoven Gateway currently describes and indexes more than 18,000 books, journal articles, essays, dissertations, criticism and reviews about the composer and his music. First editions and other music scores from the Beethoven Center’s collections are also included.

Users of the Beethoven Gateway are able to search for images by subject (i.e. Beethoven at the piano) or type (e.g. first editions). Once located in the Beethoven Gateway, images may be viewed online, downloaded as a digital file, or printed.

To enhance access to visual and primary resources on Beethoven, we are adding digital scans from the extensive rare collections at the Center. Among these visual items are:

  • Over 100 portraits of Beethoven dating from his lifetime and continuing into the 20th century.

  • Engravings of his houses and other important Viennese sites, depictions of events that affected his life (such as the Napoleonic wars)

  • Original programs from premiere and other 19th century performances

  • Primary source documents such as autograph letters signed by Beethoven, a copyist score from 1804 for the Fifth Symphony, the first edition of the Appassionata Sonata, etc.

Sponsorships for individual images are available for only $30. Sponsorships of manuscripts and first editions are available beginning at $100. Sponsor’s names, and those they wish to commemorate, will be recognized in perpetuity in the Beethoven Gateway and on the Center’s website. An email acknowledgement of your donation will include the web address where you may view the sponsored image.
